Our work is now all handed in and marked, so the next thing to do is all our degree show preparations including painting boards, making mock ups of our individual spaces and perfecting how they will look on the night of the show. Very exciting and it is sinking in how quickly the show is approaching...time flies when you're having fun!

Hello, my names Jennie Harrison. I’ve been studying BA Hons Textile and Surface Design currently in my third year and enjoying my last year of university.

My inspirations for my drawings come from the Market Research I do for each project. This decides what I draw and what colour palette I choose. I’m bright, luminute and very colourful with my work and love using different medias within my drawings. Textures within my drawings are the key to my success. I love using a variety of scaling within my work. Many of my design are multi directional repeats and are suitable for the fashion and interior industry. Shape and the follow of imagery give my work the backbone or structure. I like multi directional and other direct repeats.

I’ve just started my major project and drawing from the inspiration I found over the holidays. Currently looking at the galaxy and I’m seeing stars already. My chosen brief is to look at the ‘Cosmic future’ this theme has graphics and lots of swirling colours attached to it, which makes my so more attacked to it. My work is main print based and I’ve just learnt how to digital print my work. Which I discovered my minor project.

My final major project, ‘Come Fly with Me’, is based on the concept of using lots of different species of birds to make up designs for interiors products. I am experimenting with screen printing on to both wallpaper lengths and furnishing fabric samples. I am enjoying improving my skills for screen printing lengths and working with wallpaper at the moment. I have decided to use both types of media to show the diversity of my designs and it will also allow me to experiment with lots of different techniques. I usually prefer to use bold colours in my work rather than subtle ones, as I feel that this is the best way I work.

Hey all,

I hope you have all managed to squeeze in some time for a break and some easter eggs over the last two weeks! It's got to that busy time again so here's a little reminder of the next big dates for your diaries...

I have finished sampling from my six final designs ready to print my lengths after easter, which is nervous but exciting! I can't wait to see them in place! Here is come images of my sampling from one of my designs. I love to experiment with each design creating a variety of colour ways. I find this really helps me develop me techniques further.

I am about to graduate from Cleveland College of Art and Design after studying Textile and Surface Design.

Whilst studying I have juggled being the proprietor of a soft furnishings business, Design & Create Soft Furnishings which I operate from home. Study and work have gone hand in hand on many occasions with techniques or information being used immediately in the workplace and my experience with business, customers, sewing and contacts helping with college projects. The confidence and knowledge I now possess has enabled me to grow my business from window dressing to individual soft furnishings, sensitively representing my customer’s individuality.

CCAD has given me the freedom and inspiration to be experimental and innovative, placing trust in my instinct and ability in effective imagery and with the structure and professionalism my business has taught me, together these skills will be invaluable.

I am excited at the prospect of going forwards armed with my newly acquired skills and enthusiasm to explore the world as a Designer Maker.

My Project is called "Textured Portraits", i intend to create 4 1&1/2 meter lengths of fabric and paper printed with portraits and textures . Each length will be double layered and contain a portrait and either a background or foreground which complements the portrait.
My photos have been taken on black and white film and my project wil mostly be black and white for effect. The portraits are supposed to have an impact which is why i have printed them so large, they are supposed to prevoke a reaction.

Whilst studying Textiles and Surface Design I realised my enthusiasm for interiors and my passion for bold floras. I enjoy drawing in a quite controversial style, using a variety of mark making techniques. My imagery can be soft and feminine, with sensitive and delicate aspects, as well as harsh and sketchy to give an expressive and exciting feel. My drawing is a key part to my designs and I enjoy combining the two different styles to create contrasting repeats for furnishing fabrics and wallpapers.

My theme for my final major project is 'Botanical'. I wanted to combine this flora based theme with something contrasting and geometric. I came up with the idea of mosaic and started drawing flowers in a squared format using blocks of colour.

Successful Sponsorship!

Well done to Lauren Wilson for organising a great Sponsorship with Colourist!

I absolutely love colour and experimenting with different techniques! So, I was extremely excited that after applying for sponsorship, I was lucky enough to received some from the brilliant Colourist!

Colourist produce fabric transfer paints. I love to use them within my work to create bold backgrounds and combine with screen printing. The images above show the colours I chose which I am experimenting with in my FMP.

I heard in college, from Colleen, about the GoodWeave Rug Design Competition and I thought I would look at the brief as she thought my concept would fit in, as this year it was all about organic shapes.
I discovered that GoodWeave is a international organisation working to end child labour in the rug industry of South Asia. It funds education and rehabilitation for thousands of rescued children.
Fired up by this cause I set about designing a rug to fit in with my Fossil Collection, so that I can submit it as part of my FMP. They provided a mood board and a colour palette from which you could select a maximum of 8 colours. That had to include any shades as another colour so I chose 7 of them to colour my line drawings of ammonites. Then I did a background with some of the colours using another drawing of a trilobite (I couldn't resist doing something in repeat!).
The lucky winner gets to have their design made up in a 200cmx140cm rug + £300 so fingers crossed!

Bespoke Surface Pattern design for Commercial interiors.

As a starting point for my final major project, I chose to portray myself as the Virgin Mary, this has no religious connotations and is not intended to cause offence, but rather to indentify that for me personally this BA in Textiles and Surface Design is a new beginning, an amalgamation of previous practices and skills.

This is combined with a current trend in jewellery and influences from Cult of the Virgin, tattoos and various personal items and images from South Africa.

Central to my practice are my sketchbooks and drawing. Drawing comes naturally and is one of my greatest pleasures. Due to my training in sculpture I have a good understanding of shape and form and having trained and work as a graphic designer I gained sound knowledge of layout and design skills pre computer age. Studying Textiles and Surface Design has given me new skills and the opportunity to amalgamate these different areas of interest.
My way of working allows plenty of scope for creativity and development of unconventional ideas. I enjoy working on a larger with all manner of materials; dyes and paint in easy reach as are my sketch books and computer. I work from sketch book to computer and back to paper or fabric; pushing around pattern and texture exploring surface qualities, experimenting with scale, composition and juxtaposition. The mixed media, the unexpected, the mistakes, are an important part of my process and final outcome. In short I like to be open and spontaneous, to improvise, and be experimental. I take pleasure in turning old and new, using artificial materials like plastic, vinyl and foils combined with artisan techniques.

My final major project is about working buildings and structures into interiors in an abstract way. I am focusing on designing wallpapers aimed at the male market and looking at creating linear drawings and re-working them into unique, individual designs. I have taken inspiration from Cavern Home interiors, Trove wallpapers, Beyond the Valley and colours from Farrow and Ball. I am interested in layering images to produce really busy and interesting designs and also using blocks of colour to break up all my linear sketches. My wallpapers will be hand screen printed using pigment colours and a range of other techniques including foils and flock.

I am a student of Textiles and Surface Design, with an eager passion for Art, Textiles and Design in all its forms. I really enjoy the process of taking something from drawing to repeat and creating a design that is different and quirky from something mundane. I especially love the process of print and am confident practitioner, from foiling to flock, and dye to discharge, in carefully executed designs.
My recent project ‘Treasured Objects’ is all about objects that are loved and personal. I love objects with a history and have a theme throughout my work to keep using unusual antiques, especially these that seem to hide a story.
I am a seriously hard worker and love every part of the process of designing, from initial concept, to drawing, and from printing to embroidery. I am passionate about drawing and screen printing and I love creating hand-rendered designs and experimenting with new ideas. I delight in every part of surface design, but I especially take pleasure in it when I know it is enjoyed by others.

I am a textiles and surface design student at Cleveland College of Art and Design. I am conscientious and enthusiastic about a range of subjects within textiles with a particular affinity for print and a keen interest in fashion fabric design. I have developed the ability to design in a conceptual manner whilst also following current trends to produce contemporary and commercial designs. Working alongside various companies and businesses in live projects, competitions and exhibitions has left me with good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team as well as independently. I am well organised and focused with a strong desire to become successful within the design industry.
My inspiration comes from many different designers and my preferences change with each seasons new collections. My current favourite designers are Kenzo, Dries Van Noten, Alberta Ferreti and Matthew Williamson. I love the way these designers combine exciting, bold prints with sensitive textures and mark making and I feel that my work reflects this in some way.

A clear outline of your project (1,000 words max)

At this moment in time I’m hard at work on my final project as a student in Cleveland, My final major is unfolding before my eyes into some weird and wonderful areas with inspiration from Antony Gormley and of course London fashion week which is currently underway.

My project title is “Fluffier than meringue to as dark as death” it is based around the Second World War but focused on the torture camps, I love the controversy of this subject and the shock value as you look at my initial research although my project has moved on dramatically since looking at piles of bodies. I am now experimenting with varnish ink and photographs of rusty metal objects.

The way I work is deep in subject matter and I find it hard to skim the surface of an idea, I also usually start with a dark untouched subject because I believe it is pointless starting with something that is already beautiful.

My area of specialism is Men’s wear; this is where I could place myself in industry. I love the practicality of the garments and how modern men are so open to wearing exciting new trends, women’s wear is always going to revive itself but I feel men's wear is just starting to take off and I want to be a part of it.

My name's Stephanie Richards and I'm currently in full swing of my Final Major Project, which is all about fables and story telling through designs...Exciting stuff! Looking at stories by Anderson for lots of inspiration and loving interpreting them in my own way. I am developing my designs in placement, repeat and repeat length designs for the Interiors market and have taken a lot of inspiration from companies such as Timorous Beasties for their descriptive illustrative designs, and also exhibitions including the 'Enchanted' which was in Kensington Palace, London. trend. Within this project I hope to produce a professional collection

of furnishing fabric lengths."

Specialism: Designing repeat patterns for interior furnishing fabrics and wallpapers.
Inspirations: Things which arouse my creative senses, urging me to respond to their presence in the world; from an intriguing plant to a pair of old shoes. I love mid-century modern textile designs and admire those who created them; people like Lucienne day and Jacqueline Groag. Some other Creatives that I aspire to are Judith Cain, Victoria Crowe, Charlie Harper, John Piper, Carlene Edwards, Maija Louekari and Angie Lewin.

Currant work: ‘The north between the wars’ provides a model for the present day, it presents an example of how hard times can be overcome. The 1920s and 30s eventually became the 50s and 60s. That is the story of my Project. Out of ideas of austerity will blossom exciting, vibrant designs.

The future: Launching myself into the professional creative arena as a free lance surface pattern designer / designer maker.

For my Final Major Project I am working on repeat designs for furnishing fabrics and wallpapers which I am digitally printing and hopefully I will also do some screen printing as well. I have been inspired by the concept of systems evolving, whether it is Darwin’s evolution of the species or the evolution of the Universe since the Big Bang. The juxtaposition of the organic shapes with the bright colours found in supernova and the graphic shapes of DNA molecules should allow me to achieve a quirky contemporary feel.

I love to embellish textile pieces with both machine and hand embroidery. I was recently awarded a Madeira sponsorship and will use some of their materials to create some cushion designs based on the physics of evolution.

I have also been designing my own range of knitted dolls which I have sold at Pins and Needles, Knitting and Stitch and the Stitch and Embroidery shows and these can be seen on my website (www.dollykits.co.uk).

I am one of the part time year 6 students and so started my FMP sooner than the rest of Level 6 full timers. As a result I am quite well on with my designs for furnishing fabrics and wallpaper. These are all designed on Photoshop and then digitally printed on to fabric and paper. I have loved doing the repeat patterns from my drawings but it’s now time to move on to some placement designs for cushions.
